In addition to zeaxanthin, lutein is the other major carotenoid found in the eye, specifically located in the macula. Lutein is a potent antioxidant and acts as a filter and shield against the damaging near-to-UV blue light from the sun. Higher dietary intake of foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin has been associated with a reduced risk of macular degeneration and cataracts. Lutein cannot be synthesized by humans and must be taken from the diet.
