Foiling, filling, planting - raised beds come to life.
As part of the World Earth Day (22nd April) - on Monday, May 5th, 2025, a group of determined IMCD Germany colleagues visited our long-term partner school “Schule auf dem Sandberg” to join forces and bring six raised beds to live. Together with the pupils there, they foiled, filled and planted. Once the dust settled, a small green oasis of delicious herbs shone in the wheelchair-accessible raised beds for the pupils.
Preparation is everything
At our home base, the office in Cologne, we had already collected various green waste such as tree and hedge cuttings (coarse and small branches), shredded material, lawn cuttings, plant care waste and leaves in advance. True to the motto: ‘Bring wo(man)power or materials! We wanted to make the initiative as sustainable as possible (for example with sustainable and local "Kölner Kompost"), while also offering colleagues the opportunity to be part of the action, even if they were not directly on site.
A new “Field” of “grounded” expertise
After a quick breakfast to gather some energy, our colleagues ventured on to broaden their expert knowledge. While some shoveled, planted and repotted, others took care of the supply chain to get enough fresh soil from the nearest garden centre. A wheelbarrow was used to haul 60 kg sacks to the site. After the work was done, our colleagues returned to the office and got back to work at their desks.

About the World Earth Day
World Earth Day is celebrated every year on 22nd April and is a Global Day of Action to raise awareness of environmental and climate protection. It was first launched in the USA in 1970 and has since grown into a worldwide movement that now includes over 190 countries.
Earth Day is a fantastic opportunity to motivate people to live more sustainably, make environmentally friendly decisions and work together to find solutions to pressing ecological problems such as climate change, species extinction and environmental pollution. Every year, the day has a new motto that focuses on current challenges and approaches to action.
