Chemistry pros of tomorrow: laboratory discovery course for first and second grade with volcanic eruption and colourful black
On 27 November 2024, IMCD Germany celebrated World Children's Day with an educational event in the form of a laboratory taster course for the pupils of the cat class at GGS Balthasarstraße. Our aim was to familiarise the first and second grade children with chemistry and show them where they encounter it every day in their lives. Over 20 children visited us in the laboratory. Together with the class teacher, the accompanying adults, the experts, our dedicated helpers and organisers, the children experienced a programme full of exciting insights into the world of molecules.
The school is just a 15-minute walk from our laboratory in the immediate neighbourhood. The pharmaceutical laboratory right on the picturesque banks of the Rhine opened its doors on this typical November day and welcomed the pupils to various experiments, which were guided and carried out by our laboratory experts.
Perfectly equipped with lab coats and safety goggles, the budding professional chemists started the day at 9.30 am. The spectacular experiments ranged from lemonade flavouring to colour theory. Our experts really got stuck in:
All experiments at a glance:
Anita Vasilevska
Experiment: Making an effervescent tablet
Sandra Hackbarth
Experiment: The colourful black
Kira Odendahl
Experiment: Making lemonade with 3 different flavours
Fortified with a vitamin bomb from the fruit basket, the event continued until 11.30 am. In the place where experts from all over the world usually exchange ideas and share their knowledge, it was now the turn of the young scientists. Eager for knowledge, in a state between airy amazement and hands-on work, the class was on fire between microscope and test tube. As a successful conclusion, all the children received a certificate for their successful participation in the laboratory taster course.
About the World Children's Day
The day was introduced by the United Nations and serves to promote and honour the rights of children around the world. World Children's Day commemorates the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child on 20 November 1989.
- It is a day on which we realise how important it is to protect and promote the rights and well-being of children.
- It is an opportunity to draw attention to the needs and challenges of children and to work towards creating a better future for them.
We would like to thank all participants and our dedicated experts and volunteers for making this day possible for everyone.
